If nothing else, the Internet gives voice to the fringe. Any nut can find a following in the new media. There is a small but passionate fringe on the right that continues to insist that President Obama is not an American but was born in Kenya. I have read everything I have come across on this and the evidence is overwhelming that there is nothing to this theory. His birth announcement was carried at the time in Honolulu newspapers. Certified copies of his birth certificate have been produced.
Like people who believe that an alien spacecraft crashed at Roswell, or that man never really went to the moon, or that the intercity drug problem was purposely created by the CIA, there is no talking some people out of stupid things they believe.
Now, It is not that I would not like to believe it myself, but the evidence is overwhelming that it is not true. For an explanation of this topic visit Fact Check, where you can see the proof that disputes this crazy theory. They thoroughly debunk it. Unfortunately, Lou Dobbs continues to fan the flames and promote this theory. Liz Cheney openly promotes it and Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity keep hinting that it may be true and use humor and off the cuff comments to encourage this nuttiness.
Meanwhile, most conservatives who have spoken out on the issue have ridiculed it including American Spectator editor Bob Tyrrell, National Review, Bill O’Reilly, Joe Scarborough and even firebrands like Michelle Malkin. Ann Coulter called the birthers “just a few cranks out there.”
To all the birthers who are keeping this alive, please put aside your contempt for Barack Obama and rationally consider the evidence. There is nothing to this. You are giving liberals a gift. It is things like this that allows the mainstream press and Obama's cheerleaders to dismiss the Tea Party movement and conservative activist as irrelevant malcontents and it is things like this that keep more sane people from joining the movement.

It isn't just conservatives and Republicans that are taking a credibility hit because of birthers. CNN is getting widely derided for allowing Lou Dobbs to keep promoting birther theories.
ReplyDeleteOne recent report found that most birthers also believe that President Obama is Muslim.
Dobbs birthing interest seems linked to his vehement stance on immigration and I cannot help but wonder how much both of these are fueled by xenophobia.
Republicans are not only shooting ourselves in the foot, we are doing so with a machine gun.
ReplyDeleteFirst it was the tea parties, which on surface sounded good. That was until it turned out to be a publicity ploy for Fox News.
And then the nuts came out of the cracks. Talk of secession and paying no taxes hurt the movement and anyone associated with it.
Then came the birthers. Prominent Republicans in Congress have continued this controversy by saying the birthers have a point, and that they "don't know" if Obama was born here.
The media doesn't help this rush to self destruction. Polls indicate that the public is unhappy with how Obama is handling healthcare reform. Immediately they jump to the conclusion that means they prefer the Republican plan, idea, uh, colon blockage.
Republicans misread these polls and think we are popular again. And yet at the only polls which count, we keep losing.
As much as it hurts, the only way for Republicans to win favor again is this:
1. Dump the fringe.
2. Stop the American Taliban ruling the party.
3. Drop ALL social issues from the platform.
4. Be REAL fiscal conservatives.
5. Stop appeasing whites at the cost of minorities.
6. In unison call Rush Limbaugh an idiot.
7. Support gun control and say FU to the NRA.
Of course this will never happen. So for now, I am proud to include myself in that 21%. The few, the proud, the wingnuts.

If you spineless RINOs had done your job on 0bama back when they put McCain through the ringer for the same questions about his status as "natural born citizen" you wouldn't be going through the embarrassment of having to retrack your steps to set this right after the fact.
Set it right before the next election and you all just might get reelected if not then get ready to say goodbye to any future in politics.
There was an article in American Thinker about the birthers at http://www.americanthinker.com/2009/07/obamas_birth_debate_its_about.html . The point the article makes is that the birthers sense what a growing number of other people feel: even if Obama had been born in the White House, his values are not American. We are having a foreign, alien ideology rammed down our throats by Obama and company.
ReplyDeleteYou are so sensitive. A model of a mondern metro Republican.
ReplyDeleteWe were told to belive Rather over Bush. Fail. That Yon Kerry wore his magic commando hat into Cambodia. Fail. That there were weapons of mass destruction, that Greenspan could tune the economy. That HW Bush would have no new taxes. That the SEC watched over Madoff and that there are no steroids in Baseball.
Yeah. I'll take the no-ripping-money-out-of-my-pocket fringe anyday.
Perhaps the polling doesn't reflect this, but the "birther movement" is actually alive and well in, of all places...Upstate New York (specifically, I live in Albany). And yes, this inane "ideology" is shared by both Republicans AND some "conservative Democrats" alike up here. It's absolutely frightening. A lot of these folks also subscribe to the "Obama is a radical Muslim with terrorist pals" bandwagon. And, for the record, most of them were Hillary supporters, and even some of the Dems tune into Limbaugh on a daily basis. I just don't get these people at all...I need to get outta here ASAP.
ReplyDeleteKISS MY ASS YOU FREAKIN' RINO!!!
ReplyDeleteIF YOU THINK OBLACKMA IS AN AMERICAN YOU HATE AMERICA! HE HATES AMERICA TOO. GO TO HELL LIBERAL RINO TRAITOR! YOU ARE DOING THE CONSERVATIVE MOVEMENT NO FAVOR! HAVE YOU FORGOTTEN REAGAN'S 11TH COMMANDMENT?
GET OUT OF OUR PARTY, EFFETTE RINO MODERATE SQUISHES
Now THAT was special.
ReplyDeleteI think George Bush is trampling the Constitution...
ReplyDeleteIn light of what Obama has done to the Constitution, that you have not updated that blurb from your profile embarrases me.
So many elitist snobs in this party. We lunatics are not one trick ponies. You might be surprised that this lunatic tries to keep up with most of the issues facing this country.
Yes...Stop The American Taliban period.
ReplyDeleteIn America, there is an increasing movement to legislate morality and deny it's citizens from having access to rights and benefits because it goes against an organized theology. Many times the very people attempting to influence legislation are guilty of the very things the campaign against.
