Tea vs TEA: Dueling rallies

Tea party leader Ken Marrero addresses the education reform rally,
while anti-tax activist Ben Cunningham looks on.

Today in Nashville, hundreds of pro-union demonstrators from across the state marched in the rain through downtown Nashville and then rallied in Legislative Plaza. They were rallying to show solidarity with the Tennessee Education Associations and protest pending legislation that would restrict union tenure and end collective bargaining for public sector teachers.

Meanwhile, a pro education reform rally took place on the east steps of the capitol on the hill above the plaza. The unionist rally probably outnumbered the Tea Party education reform rally by about three to one. The union sponsored rally had bussed people in from across Tennessee and included members of the machinist union, pipefitters and various other unions.

It is doubtful either rally had much impact since the legislators are not in town on Saturday. Both rallies featured speeches, signs, and sing-alongs. I participated in the Tea Party education reform rally and observed the unionist parade and rally from the sidewalk and the hill above the Plaza. Here are pictures from both rallies.

Great things are happening in the Davidson County Republican Party!

Great things are happening in the Davidson County Republican Party! This Saturday the Party will transform from a top-down organization into a grassroots organization. The party will be holding it's biennial party caucus. Actually it will be holding thirty-five separate caucuses, one for each of Metro Nashville's thirty-five council districts. The caucuses will occur at the same place and at the same time but are in fact thirty-five separate meetings.

At the district caucuses, each caucus will elect delegates who later in the month will attend the County Convention which will then elect members of the Davidson County Republican Executive Committee. This occurs every two years, so why is this year different?

First of all, in the past each caucus elected a District Caucus chairman whose job it was to oversee the business of the caucus that day. After that, the District Caucus Chairman had no job to do. The District Caucus Chairman, may or may not stay active in the Party, but he or she was never called upon to do anything and had no job description. This year the District Caucus Chairman is expected to become an active cog in the wheel of the party. Below is the job description for District Caucus Chairman:

The District Committee Chairman shall be elected at the biennial caucus convention and serve until the next caucus.

Duties of the District Chairman shall include but not be limited to conducting the caucus meeting, organizing Republicans within his District, identifying and recruiting poll watchers, poll workers, precinct captains, campaign poll workers, and Councilmanic candidates within his Councilmanic District.

The District Chairman shall work closely with the Regional Vice Chairman for his region to communicate ideals, position and events to residents of his District. The District Chairman shall assist the Regional Vice Chairman in starting and maintaining Republican groups within his district.

Should the District Committee Chairman be unable to perform his duties or move out of his district he will report his resignation to the Regional Vice Chairman.
As you can see, the District Caucus Chairman will be expected to organize his district. How this plays out in reality depends on how hard the District Caucus Chairman wants to work at the job, but the District Chairman has the potential to become a very important person in his District. It is my hope that people only accept the District Chair position if they intend to be active year-round. It is my hope that members of each caucus will give serious thought to whom they elect. These position have the potential to groom the leaders and candidates of the Party in future years.

The other thing that has the potential to transform the Party is the new makeup of the Executive Committee. In addition to Chair, Vice Chair, Treasurer, and Secretary and a couple other positions making up the Executive Committee, there have been "at-large" members of the Executive Committee and three Regional Vice Chairman. This is changing also.

The position of At-large Member is being abolished and there will now be seven Regional Vice Chairman. Each Regional Vice Chair will be responsible for seven council district and will be responsible for working with the District Chairman in their region to build the party. The Regional Vice Chairs have actual job description similar to that of the District Chair above except they are responsible for seven councilmanic districts. They are expected to work with the District Chairmen to create a real organization in their region. In my view, the Regional Vice Chair's may be the most important positions on the Executive Committee. They are in a position to create a powerful organization in their regions.

At one time you could fit active Davidson County Republicans in a large phone booth or a VW beetle. The last two years have shown tremendous growth for the Party. The success of the annual Picnic, the Reagan Day Dinner, the creation of the Chairman's circle, the creation of the mailing list and a website, the establishment of the various Republican Breakfast Groups, the opening of a Party Headquarters, the first Republican primary in something like thirty years, and most of all the election of Jim Gotto to the State House in what had been a Democratic legislative district are great achievements. Now the Party is poised to create a genuine grassroots Party. There is no reason Republicans cannot take half the Courthouse seats. There is no reason a Republican cannot win the Fifth Congressional District! I am excited.

If you have ever complained about the Davidson County Republican Party, if you have ever wanted to get involved, if you want to advance the Republican cause, this is the time to do something about it. NOW IS THE TIME FOR ALL GOOD MEN TO COME TO THE AID OF THEIR PARTY.

Please plan on attending the Party district caucuses this Saturday. The caucuses convene promptly at 9AM and should be over no later than 10:30AM. For those who plan to attend the Education Reform rally at the capitol building at 11AM, you will be out in time to do so. Please attend and help transform and build our Party.

a big reason to vote against Democrat candidate Ken Wilber and for Kerry Roberts

In the State Senate District 18 race there are not only reasons to vote for Republican candidate Kerry Roberts but a big reason to vote against Democrat candidate Ken Wilber.

NASHVILLE, TN – The City of Portland submitted their annual financial audit just yesterday, despite the fact that the fiscal year ended on June 30th of last year. The audit exposes poor financial management by Portland Mayor Ken Wilber, who is also a candidate in the special election for State Senate in District 18.
The independent audit indicated that “the City’s sales tax was higher than ever” during the economic downturn. The audit also shows that the City’s total debt outstanding at the end of the fiscal year was $14,751,000 with an increase of $482,000 from the previous fiscal year.

“This audit shows Mr. Wilber does not have the ability to serve as mayor, much less state senator. Our state’s economy is too fragile to risk putting it in the hands of Ken Wilber. That’s why this special election is so important,” said Tennessee Republican Party Chairman Chris Devaney.

“Ken Wilber is hoping that Republicans stay at home and not vote. That’s part of the reason why we think it took Mayor Wilber so long to submit this audit- because he didn’t want voters to know how bad his financial management really is,” continued Devaney.

Just last year, News Channel 5 in Nashville reported that the City of Portland illegally moved over $1.3 million from a utility fund to the general fund in order to make up for their budget shortfall. According to the news report, “The state said the fiscal offense is serious enough to begin ouster proceedings against the mayor…”

Ken Wilber is running against Republican Kerry Roberts. Roberts has been endorsed by Governor Bill Haslam, Lt. Governor Ron Ramsey, Rep. Diane Black and Rep. Marsha Blackburn, among others.
Early voting ends this Thursday and Election Day is Tuesday, March 8th.

Can you give me 5 Elvises and three Cashes for this Opry?

Senate Republican Bill Ketron who sponsored the controversial bill to criminalize the practice of Shariah law, has come up with a new proposal to set up a committee to look into what it would take for Tennessee to come up with an alternate currency to the Federal Reserve Note.

I share Senator’s Ketron’s fear that the US is headed for hyper inflation so I guess if the state can legally come up with a competing currency that may not be a bad idea.  Can states issue their own currency? There is nothing wrong with studying the issue.

Whose picture should be on the Tennessee dollar bill? For the Tennessee $1, I guess I would have to go with Elvis Presley.  How does this sound: “Can I borrow an Elvis?” For the $5 I would like a Johnny Cash. “Do you have a Cash I can borrow?”  I would also propose “an Opry” and “a Parton” and a “Davy Crockett.”

My Comment:
I wholehearted endorse Robert Duvall's reelection. He is a principled, common-sense, hard-working, smart conservative who is not hesitant to identify himself as a Republican. He has done a lot to help build the Republican Party in Davidson County. He cares about his community, Nashville and his country. He supports limited government, private property rights and low taxes.  And, he is a caring, kind individual. He is a fighter. Because of his leadership and willingness to stand up to the administration, he is being targeted for defeat. We must reelect Robert Duvall. Rod

Shariah compliant credit cards spread!

Shariah compliant credit cards spread and some people are in a panic. To believe the folks at Jihadist Watch and Creeping Shariah  and some local conservatives, things like this put us on that slippery slope that leads to stoning to death of adulterous women and beheading apostates.

You already can get a credit card that promotes your favorite sports team or rock band. Now you can get a card that, if you are a Muslim, does not  violate the moral code of Sharia which prohibits paying interest. No one makes you get such a card mind you and you have to ask for it. Nevertheless, some see such cards as a threat to the Republic.

If one is concerned about businesses that voluntarily cater to the dietary or financial desires of a religious minority. I have something that will really freak you out. Ready? Kroger's sells Kosher dill pickles!

Treasurer David Lillard says current economic upturn benefits the state

From Dru's Vues,too, Saturday, Feb. 26, 2011

House Speaker Beth Harwell and State Treasurer David Lillard
visited with Green Hills Republicans Sat. morning at Swett's Cafeteria.
Lillard called Speaker Harwell, "an experienced leader whose time has come."
"Tennessee is much better off than most other states," State Treasurer David Lillard told Green Hills Republicans.  He noted the current economic "upturn is working for us" bringing in about $300 million in new revenue. The new money does not, however, close the $900 million budget gap the state faces. (link)
