Unfortunately, among many Republican grassroots activist, opinion molders such as Rush Limbaugh and most of the rest of talk radio, and pandering Republican politicians, global warming is a hoax perpetrated by Al Gore. With the Republican response to global warming being, "what problem; its a hoax," the search for solutions is left up to Democrats who don't believe in economics, cost-benefit analysis, or economic growth and who see global warming as another opportunity to redistribute wealth and expand government. The Democrat solutions are not solutions at all and the Republicans are not joining the conversation.
Fortunately, not all Republicans are in the "its all a hoax" camp. In this article by the four EPA Chiefs under Presidents Richard M. Nixon, Ronald Reagan, George Bush and George W. Bush they review the Obama program on climate change and make a case for climate action. While, I do not agree with their acceptance of Obama's overreaching use of regulatory power to deal with the issue, I think the rest of their argument is on target: global warming is real and we must deal with it, we can have both a strong economy and a livable climate, and the solution to the problem lies in a market-based approach and common-sense conservative principle.
A Republican Case for Climate Action
The New York Times,By WILLIAM D. RUCKELSHAUS, LEE M. THOMAS, WILLIAM K. REILLY and CHRISTINE TODD WHITMAN August 1, 2013-
EACH of us took turns over the past 43 years running the Environmental Protection Agency. We served Republican presidents, but we have a message that transcends political affiliation: the United States must move now on substantive steps to curb climate change, at home and internationally.
There is no longer any credible scientific debate about the basic facts: our world continues to warm, with the last decade the hottest in modern records, and the deep ocean warming faster than the earth’s atmosphere. Sea level is rising. Arctic Sea ice is melting years faster than projected. (link)
