Oh, dear. Rod, you are not trotting out the old Peace-symbol-is-a-satanist-upsidedown-cross thing, are you? You are not aware that the symbol dates back to 1958, and is traced back to a single man, Gerald Holtom? The cross in a circle is semaphore for C(ampaign for) N(culear) D(isarmament). And if you still insist in pointing out that it is an upside down cross, remember that it is a Catholic tradition to honor St. Peter, who insisted upon being crucified inverted, as he was not worthy of the Lord. Or are the folks on this list under the thrall of the comic books of Jack T. Chick? (In which case, there is no helping any of you.)
ReplyDeleteNo, my objection to the peace sign has nothing to do with it being an upside down cross. I find it offensive because it was the banner under which American fifth columnist allies of Ho Chi Minh marched. It was the banner carried by those who wanted a Communist victory in Vietnam.
ReplyDeleteThe peace sign is not a satanic plot? So far, so good. I apologize for assuming such. But what was, if anything could be, a "satanic plot"? The (undeclared) Vietnam war? We cannot prove anything on a blog, but sir, will you at least concede that: people at the time who wanted the war to stop had something of case as understood then? And what about now? The US lost the war, and in the scheme of global containment (which was the rationale for the war, you may recall), it made NO difference! Vietnam is still a commie land, no dominoes fell, we are not speaking Russian today--we buy reasonably-priced furniture from the Spawns of Satan!

Even if all of those many many people who were against the war were evil people marching under the banner of Satan, aren't there better ways to make your point than to demonize? Alas, as much as old Buckleyites grumble about hippie Fifth Columnists and pine for the good old days of near nuclear death and unconstitutional wars, you really really really can't make a case for the Vietnam war, or for Reagan's Neocon Team B arms build up. the Soviets did not have the wealth to conqueror us, just as we did not have the wealth to conquer a tiny nowhere third world nation is Southeast Asia. Mr. Williams: To get back on topic, consider your complaint about some thousands of uneducated college students wearing a tee shirt with the face of mass killer Guevara on the front. I am willing to forgive the stupid kids because they simply do not know any better. What I am less inclined to forgive are the four and a half million red state social conservatives who "Liked" the webpage of Dumbya Bush--you know, Bush the conqueror of Baghdad? Bush invaded a nation and ruined the lives of many millions of people--and OOPS!, no WMD. Whatever one is to do with Bush today, a "Like" is pretty tasteless. This is a case of motes and beams, if only on utilitarian grounds, because Bush murdered many more than Guevara.

I mention this because real conservatives will get more worked up by Bush imposters who smashup the movement for civilization, than drugged college students wearing a tee shirt.
