How do American Muslims view Sharia Law and American values?

Filmmaker Ami Horowitz was alarmed by the growing number of Somali Americans living in Minneapolis who have joined up with the Islamist-terror groups ISIS and al-Shabaab. So he recently traveled to that city to speak with members of the community about how much American values resonated with them, their feelings about sharia law and terrorism, and whether they’d prefer to live in Somalia or America. Their answers were revealing.

It is easier to not see nuisances and complexities when dealing with controversial issue. When it comes to Muslim immigrants there are two prevailing points of view.  One view is that we must be welcoming and assume that Muslims will assimilate and that it is wrong to question their loyalty.  All religions are equally of value and ones religion is unimportant. To question this assumption is pure bigotry.

The other point of view is that Islam is fundamentally incompatible with American society and values and that all Muslims are terrorist in waiting and that we should ban Muslim immigration and that it is suicidal to welcome followers of this foreign ideology to settle among us.

I thought that the local opposition to a mosque being built in Mufressboro displayed a lot of pure bigotry, ignorance and nastiness.  On the other hand, I do not think all concern about Muslim immigration is unfounded. While one video may not be the final word on the issue and one does not know how representative the people interviewed in this video are of Muslim immigrant opinion it would be foolish to not recognize that the views expressed in the above video are representative of a significant number of Muslim immigrants.

Rachel Maddow: Orlando attack follows ISIS 'soft target' call

This video is diffidently worth watching. It explains why "lone wolf" terrorist attacks are still "terror attacks."

Rachel Maddow is one of my least favorite on-air news personalities, or news reporters, or commentators, or whatever the term may be.  She makes me cringe.  Her smug, cutesy, preachy, unfiltered self-righteous  liberalism makes be want to throw things at the TV.  I feel the same way about her as I am sure many liberals must feel about Rush Limbaugh.  She is not boring however and despite my dislike for  her, I still occasionally watch her.  I was surprised recently to see her explain something better than I have  heard it explained by anyone else. I must give her credit.  I guess even a blind pig finds an acorn every once  in  while.

In the past few years there have been several of these "lone wolf" terrorist attacks. Just like in Orlando, the perpetrator claims his allegiance to ISIS or claims he is committing his act in the name of Allah.  Conservatives generally are quick to call these attacks, acts of terrorism; liberals, not so much.  The media is reluctant to initially speculate that these acts are acts of terrorism.  Sometimes the media and government spokesmen will claim the massacre  was "work place violence," or a "hate crime," or the perpetrator was suffering from mental illness. The religious faith of the attacker is not one of the first things they initially consider important.   It is almost as if they are looking for any motivation for the attack other than radical Islam.  When no ties can be found to ISIS or other organized terrorist groups the act is often  not considered to be a terror attack.

In this report Rachel Maddow explores the way the ISIS terrorist organization encourages attacks on western civilian targets by followers who act independently and are not given specific orders. ISIS gives a general order for their followers in the West to not come to the Middle East to join ISIS on the battlefield but tells them to commit terrorist attacks on the infidels where they are.  ISIS says do not ask permission or coordinate with us; just do it.  They also say hit soft targets; that does more to spread terror than hitting military or hardened targets. ISIS also tells their followers to make it know they are doing it as an act of Jihad and are loyal to ISIS. Maddow does a great job of laying all of this out.

Six questions we should ask after Orlando

1) Are there more home-grown terrorists than we realize? The short answer is probably yes. While the United States has fewer Muslim ghettos than the UK or France, the growing emphasis on what makes us different rather than what makes us the same almost dictates there will be more young Muslims drawn to the extremist ISIS message. Similarly, Saudi and other money has poured into mosques and Islamic schools advancing a more extremist message.

2) Are lone wolves avoidable? My instinct is largely yes. But that will require more attention to centers of extremism, including foreign funded schools and mosques; more attention to those who seem inclined to extremism; more of the intrusive government that liberals and conservatives together loathe; more scrutiny of those who will end up being entirely innocent. Worth it? You tell me.

3) Why guns? There’s a tendency to attribute more planning and strategic thinking to terrorists, who often rely on luck to inflict their damage. But guns have a special political part in American life. There’s the constitutional right to bear arms, and the fierce devotion of many Americans to that right. And there is the passionate opposition of many — the President of the United States included — to the sale and ownership of those guns. And here we are, talking about guns. Talking about a terrorist attack in the context of other mass shootings as if they were the same. Was that on purpose? Utilitarian? Can guns do more damage than the preferred tool of terrorists, the explosive device? Are they easier to find? Or is this a more sophisticated effort to divide the public?

4) Who can buy a gun? Apparently, terrorists. Former residents on terrorism watch lists. Former known associates of actual terrorists. We all know why: Stove piping. The FBI, local law enforcement, intelligence and the myriad other enforcement agencies all keep their lists separate. This is why the Department of Homeland Security was created in the wake of 9/11 — to stop this sort of stove piping and ensure that information is shared. Guess what? It still isn’t. And more government bureaucracy hasn’t fixed it.

5) Why a gay nightclub? Was it just opportunism? Hatred? Another strategic effort to direct and divide conversation? Hard to know. But remember, the narrative for Islamists is that they are hitting at the “corrupt heart” of America. A Turkish Islamist paper headlined the event thus: “50 perverts killed in bar”. In addition to women, Jews, Christians and other Muslims, gays have become a favored target for Islamists. What is US policy doing about that? Not much. And contrary to the favored trope — we win by living our lives — the short answer is that we’re not winning. Their virus is spreading from Syria to Turkey to Afghanistan and beyond.

6) Should we bar all Muslims? Omar Mateen was born in the United States. Major Nidal Hasan was in the US Army. But there’s a more important issue here. What does the United States stand for? As vile as it is, a terrorist attack against a gay club in Florida doesn’t alter the American way of life. But beginning to segregate the country, immigration policy and attitudes based on religion will change us. What makes America great is the hope it holds for the world, the example it shows. Barack Obama may not like to admit it, but America is the greatest nation because of our values, because of our openness, because of our conviction that what it takes to be an American is a commitment to this country, not a creed or a race or a sex. Are those days of greatness behind us?

My comment.

Having listened to and read a lot of news and commentary on the terrorist attack in Orlando, this above essay comes closest to summing up my feeling.

Item #6 is something that I have been conflicted over.  It would be tempting to say we should ban all Muslims immigration to America, but I agree with the author.  We cannot withdraw from the world and pull up the drawbridge.  Many of the worlds Muslim refugees are the one who have fled ISIS areas and had their life put in danger.  They are our allies in the fight against radical Islam, they are not our enemy.  We must be mindful that there could be enemy infiltrators among them and we should try to properly vet them, but we cannot not turn our back on those who are the primary victims of radical Islam. Also, if we had never gone to war in Iraq, perhaps ISIS would have never developed.  To a certain degree, we have an obligation to deal with the mess beyond a mere humanitarian obligation. Also, as the author says, "What makes America great is the hope it holds for the world, the example it shows."  We should not abandon our values in tough times.

On item #3, I agree with the writer.  The mainstream media and the Obama administration has tried to turn this tragedy into a focus on guns instead of terrorism. On item #4, I think the author raises a good point in critiquing the failure of the various government agencies to share information and improve intelligence. I am not going to jump on the bandwagon, however, and say that if one's name is on "no-fly" list, they should not be allowed to purchase a weapon.  The "no-fly" list is compiled in secret without due process.  Given the recent history of the IRS in targeting critics of the administration, I do not trust an administration, any administration, to draw up a secret list of people for whom it is permissible to take away their constitutional rights.  Maybe a waiting period for those on the list could be imposed, and a purchase of a weapon by someone whose name is on the list should alert authorities,  but we should not deny constitutional rights based on a secret list. Again, we should not abandon our values in tough times.

On item #2, I do think we should be doing more to know what goes on in the American Muslim community.  When the FBI brought down the Klu Klux Klan, it seems that in any gathering of three Klansmen, one of them was an FBI informant.  I would hope we have Muslim informants in every mosque in America and every Muslim student group.   I don't know the extent of our intelligence gathering, but I have the impression that political correctness and reluctance to "profile" keeps us from gathering the intelligence we need to be gathering. It is not a violation of constitutional rights to infiltrate and attend meetings.  We should be mindful of the constitutional right of American citizens but we should not shy away from delving deep into the American Muslim community to determine what is taking place.

On item #1, I think the writer is right when she says, "the growing emphasis on what makes us different rather than what makes us the same almost dictates there will be more young Muslims drawn to the extremist ISIS message."  That is not to say that I am naive and think that putting a "Coexist" bumper sticker on your car and constantly proclaiming "Islam is a religion of peace" will produce fewer Jihadist, but I do think that we should work to integrate Muslims into American society rather than isolate them. Hateful comments and jokes insulting to Muslims and discrimination against Muslims probably does fertilize the seeds of radical Islam.

In addition to the above, I think the U. S. should join the debate within the Muslim community in the rest of the world.  Just as Radio Liberty and Radio Free Europe provided the truth to those behind the iron curtain and kept hope alive during the dark days of the cold war, we perhaps should launch a campaign to influence the dialogue in Islamic nations and give a voice to those who oppose the insanity of radical Islam. We should give a platform to  moderate Muslims clerics to counter those funded by Saudi Arabia.  We should fund moderate non-governmental organizations and publications.  We should provide news and entertainment and commentary by those speaking in a sane voice in the voice of the local people.   Muslims are now 23% of the worlds population and gaining. We must engage to make the world safe. We can't retreat to fortress American and draw up the drawbridge and we must remain true to our values.

Town hall forum on Islam in Textbooks draws standing room only

News Channel 5, FRANKLIN, Tenn. - Dozens of people including several lawmakers gathered at a town hall meeting in Williamson County to discuss religion in school. The meeting focused on educating the community and discussing concerns surrounding the teaching of Islam in Tennessee textbooks.(link)

by Sky Arnald, Fox 17, Brentwood - A packed crowd gathered in Brentwood Wednesday night for a town hall forum on Islam in Schools.

Many in the crowd are concerned about a 7th grade textbook many students are using in Tennessee.
"The book becomes a paper tyrant," said speaker Bill Warner.

Opponents say the textbook is in 40 school districts and its writers have ties to radical Islam.
"There is something seriously wrong with who's writing our textbooks," said speaker Cathy Hinners.
Susan Curlee was among the parents in the crowd.

Curlee is a school board member in Williamson county... (link

FDR Was Trump on Steroids, Liberal icon targeted Germans, Italians, and Japanese in wartime.

by Jeffery Lord, American Spectator, 12,8,2015 - So Donald Trump saying that there should be a “total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States” makes him some sort of crazy, dangerous guy?

If liberals — and even, astonishingly — some Republicans believe this? Wow. What in the world to then make of President Franklin D. Roosevelt? FDR, if one takes in the current wisdom, was Trump on steroids.

For those who read history, and alas, perhaps lots of people who should do not, there was FDR in the aftermath of Pearl Harbor and the entrance of the U.S. into war with Germany, Italy, and Japan doing the following things that would make Donald Trump look like a nerdy weakling.

Germany, Italy and the Japanese were the Muslims of the day in December, 1941. And FDR responded as follows, first with the Germans in presidential proclamation 2526 that was titled as being targeted to …this is a direct quote — “Aliens: Germans.” And what of those “Alien” Germans? FDR demanded that

… all natives, citizens, denizens, or subjects of the hostile nation or government, being of the age of fourteen years and upward, who shall be within the United States and not actually naturalized, shall be liable to be apprehended, restrained, secured, and removed as alien enemies. The President is authorized in any such event, by his proclamation thereof, or other public act, to direct the conduct to be observed, on the part of the United States, toward the aliens who become so liable; the manner and degree of the restraint to which they shall be subject and in what cases, and upon what security their residence shall be permitted, and to provide for the removal of those who, not being permitted to reside within the United States, refuse or neglect to depart therefrom; and to establish any other regulations which are found necessary in the premises and for the public safety. (link)
My Comment:
FDR is no role model for those who support liberty

I think the author's point is worth sharing but it does not persuade me that Donald Trump is right in wanting to stop entry into this country of everyone of the Islamic faith. I want those who idealize FDR to be aware of this however, but not to make the point that what Trump is proposing must be OK because it is the same thing FDR did, but to show what evil was perpetrated by that liberal hero FDR.  FDR went much further than Trump has proposed, however.

By executive order, unchallenged by Congress, FDR ordered the internment of between 110,000 to 120,000 people of Japanese ancestry who lived on the West Coast. They were moved to camps in the interior of the country. Sixty-two percent of them were American citizens. They were not convicted of any crimes; they were relocated simply because they were Japanese.  Instead of using FDR to again justify bigotry, maybe FDR's image needs to get the Nathan Bedford Forrest treatment and buildings named after him  need to have their name changed, and street names need to be renamed, and the FDR statues need to topple. FDR is not an example to emulate. He is an example of the evil we should avoid.

By being forcible relocated, Japanese Americans lost their freedom and of course their jobs and then of course lost their businesses and their homes and their belongings. Thanks to the census bureau the government knew where all of these people of Japanese ancestry were.  If I were a Muslim American, I would probably lie to the census bureau and claim to be a Christian when completing the census. I think it is morally OK to lie to the government.

It was not until 1980 that the government examined our World War II policy of putting Japanese-Americans in concentration camps. In 1988, President Ronald Reagan signed into law the Civil Liberties Act, which apologized for the internment on behalf of the U.S. government and authorized a payment of $20,000 to each individual camp survivor. The legislation admitted that government actions were based on "race prejudice, war hysteria, and a failure of political leadership."

I am not for doing nothing about the threat of radical Islam. I am for temporarily restricting Syrian immigration. Those against a restriction on Syrian immigration claim that all of these Syrian refugees are well vetted but that is obviously bogus. There is no way to vet them if you can not do a background check or access records. They are checked against a list of known terrorist and interviewed. In addition to the possibility that radical Islamist are mixed in with the refugees, there is a danger that some of those who arrive to our shores will be radicalized once they are here.

I am also for closely monitoring the Muslim community and look for incidents of terrorist planning or attempts to radicalize American Muslims.  I do not want the government doing illegal break-ins or wire taps, but I hope FBI agents are infiltrating mosque across America. We should level the same scrutiny toward the Muslim American community as we did the pro-Nazi American Bund and American First organizations during the World War II era, or the pro-Communist and Communist and New Left movements during the Cold War, or as we did in the effort to bring down the Ku Klux Klan during the civil rights era. I would hope we have paid informants and agents as members of every mosque congregation in America. And I hope we are reading every Facebook post and website that might possibly have connection to radical Islam. So, I am not for naively assuming that radical Islam is not a threat. I am not for doing nothing.

On the other hand however, we do not want to let bigotry and war hysteria lead us to again violate our basic values and ignore the constitution.  We must resist the call to consider every person of the Muslim faith as the enemy.  We must resist the call to do things like close all mosque in America. We must resist those impulses that would lead us to treat Muslim Americans the same way we did Japanese Americans in World War II.

Maybe the Social Studies standards that make an Islamic textbook necessary is the real problem.

I recently posted about the uproar by parents in White County about what has been called "Islamic indoctrination" of their children (link). I said in that post that I did not know the truth about what was being reported and had not read the textbook in question but I doubted school board members and educators in White County had an agenda to indoctrinate kids in Islamic theology and I said I suspected the truth of what was going on was somewhere between an excess of naive liberal political correctness and bigotry.

I still have not read the textbook in question and still think the charge that kids are being indoctrinated may be a bit strong.  However, the textbook in question may be inappropriate. It can be inappropriate without being part of plot to turn little Johnny into an Islamic terrorist. Not only may the textbook be inappropriate but the standards that make such a textbook necessary may to be a bigger problem.

Michael Patrick Leahy in a piece in Britbart News  quotes a teacher by the name of Kyle Mallory who has many years experience teaching social studies and who sits on the State Textbook and Instructional Materials Quality Commission. Mr. Mallory opposed the adoption of the current Social Studies standards. “These [new Social Studies] standards are not appropriate for seventh grade," he says. "We need to revert back to the old standards. They were very comprehensive and at grade level."

Here is an excerpt from The Britbart News article:

In contrast to the current seventh grade standards, which deal with World History and Geography exclusively during the period 400 AD to the 1500s, (an approach more often associated with high school or college curriculum), the previous standards provided a very broad overview of cultural, economic, geographic, governance and civics, and historical issues that have shaped our current world.

All major religions – Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Islam – were briefly summarized in the old standards. Students were introduced to the complexity of the various cultures in the world at an “age appropriate” level of detail.

In contrast, only Islam is given detailed attention in the new standards. In fact, as Breitbart News reported previously, 13 percent of the learning objectives of the current standards (10 out of 75) are devoted to instructing students on both the tenets and history of Islam.
That in itself is a concern. Why should only Islam be given detailed attention.  Even if the textbook is not biased, if an inappropriate amount of time is given to the study of Islam, then other areas of study are being ignored.

Mallory says there is a serious problem in counties that have not yet purchased the textbook in question.  In those counties, teachers are going to the internet and printing off material to use in their class that support the standards. Some of that material may be material that originates with the Council on American-Islamic Relations.  Mallory also points out that, “Many teachers teaching seventh grade are sixth to eighth grade certified, not content teachers.”

I share that general criticism of education, beyond just this topic. Many teacher are not scholars in their topic of study and they have been taught how to teach but may not know any more about the topic they are charged with teaching than the parents of their students or the average man on the street. The teachers may not be able to select objective material or judge biased material or know very little about the topic they are teaching. If teachers are just downloading material from the internet and using it in their classroom, I can see how that could be a real problem.

I stand by my opinion that bigotry may be partly responsible for the charge that children are being indoctrinated in Islam.  A few years ago we saw  bigotry at play when people in Murfressboro fought to stop local Muslims from building a mosque simply because it was a mosque and we also saw it in play when Governor Haslam was accused of trying to impose Sharia law on Tennessean simply because the Department of Commerce hired a well-qualified Tennessean who happened to be a Muslim.

While bigotry and prejudice may be at play in getting people riled up, that does not mean that the textbook in question may not also be biased or inappropriate, and perhaps more importantly, that the social study standards are inappropriate.

While Mr. Mallory has made a good case that the Social Studies standards are inappropriate, I still do not know what is in the text book in question that is objectionable. If anyone has examined it, I would like to see examples of what concerns them and what bias they found.

Citizen's riled in White County over Islamic indoctrination.

SPARTA, Tenn. -- About 350 concerned citizens gathered at a church in White County upset about a textbook. They want the school board to get rid of a 7th grade history book that they believe promotes Islamic indoctrination.
"It is our time, it is our place to stop it here," said Steve Gill, a speaker at the event. (link)

I don't know what the truth is about reported Islamic indoctrination in White County but people are certainly riled up.  I have not read the textbook in question, but I doubt many of those at the church in Sparta have either.  Tennessee Eagle Forum has devoted the last couple days of its newsletter to the issue. To view the newsletter and learn Eagle Forum's take on the controversy, follow this link

I support public and parental involvement in public education and think education is too important to be left up to educators. We know the majority of educators are liberal as evidenced by the role of the National Education Association in Democrat Party politics. Even liberals however, I do not think, have an agenda to indoctrinate kids in Islamic theology.

I do think however the agenda of promoting people being non-judgmental and politically correct may distort what and how educators teach. They may be so devoted to a why-can't-we-all-just-get-along attitude, a belief that all views are equally valid, possess an Obama-like attitude of apology for America's role in the world, and believe that if we would just be more respectful and understanding of other people that they would not do bad things, that promoting that belief system amounts to bending over backwards to present Islam in a favorable light and ignoring Islamic fanaticism. I doubt educators are indoctrinating kids in Islamic theology, but I don't doubt that they are indoctrinating them in a liberal world view and that may be almost as bad.

On the other hand, there are ignorant people who don't want their children to be exposed to other cultures and faiths and other points of view. There are people who think all of Islam is represented by Al Qaeda and ISIS's and they don't want anyone pointing out that most of the world's Muslims are not terrorist. There are people who think their view of Islam is more accurate than that of Islamic scholars.

In World War II there were many who thought rounding up and imprisoning Americans of Japanese descent was a good idea.  That way of thinking has not disappeared.  If  today it was proposed that all Muslim be put in concentration camps, I fear there would be many Americans who would support that proposal. There are people who support Freedom of Religion as long as it is their religion but think Muslims should not be allowed to build mosques in America.  Is is easy to fill a room by preaching xenophobia and Islamophobia and bigotry. I don't know what the truth is.  I suspect it is somewhere between an excess of naive liberal political correctness and bigotry.

Tennessee School Boards Association is telling districts to fight records request about what is being taught about Islam.

It is unbelievable but true that the Tennessee School Boards Association is telling districts to fight a records request from a conservative legal group that's trying to get school districts across Tennessee to reveal  what they are teaching middle-schoolers about Islam.

I am not prepared to claim that the opponents of what is being taught are overzealous, xenophobic, know-nothings or that what is being taught amounts to pro-Islamic indoctrination.  It could be a little of both, but before reaching a conclusion we need to know what in fact is being taught.  Public schools are not the private laboratories of educators who get to mold little minds to their liking with no interference from the public.  Parents, legislators, the press and anyone else should have access to everything taught in the schools.

The American Center for Law & Justice has made an open records request of all Tennessee school districts requesting records and information on what students are learning about Islam and other religions and how students are being taught and what resources teachers are using. That seems like information to which anyone should have access.

The State Legislature should take a strong stand against any district that stonewalls revealing what they are teaching and make it clear that the public has a right to know what is being taught in public schools. Refusing to reveal what is being taught causes me to suspect the schools have something to hide.  For more see links here, here, and here.

Vandy Students rally against free speech.

    Carol Swain
Students and faculty rallied on Vanderbilt campus yesterday condemning Carol Swain for an op-ed piece she wrote for the Tennessean this week and labeled her opinion piece as "hate speech."

Vanderbilt professor of law and political science Carol Swain published an op-ed in The Tennessean on Jan. 15 entitled “Charlie Hebdo attacks prove critics were right about Islam."  The piece was a response to the Jan. 7 attack by gunmen on the offices of the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in Paris. The magazine had previously published cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad. that offended Muslims.

In her article, Swain wrote that “Islam is not like other religions in the United States, that it poses an absolute danger to us and our children unless it is monitored better than it has been under the Obama administration.”

In response to Dr. Swain’s editorial, Farishtay Yamin, a Muslim student at Vanderbilt, set up a an event on Facebook for a “Campus-Wide Protest Against Hate Speech Published in the Tennessean.”  She said recent political events have made Muslims in the West feel “scared and unwelcome” and expressed hope that the protest could demonstrate that “Vanderbilt students are committed to making this university a welcoming and safe place for everyone.” (link)

With 60 degree whether, yesterday was a nice day for a protest. The Tennessean and other media covered the event. Channel 5 said "hundreds of students" joined the protest. Some faculty members joined in the protest as well. For a YouTube video of a speech given by a professor who took part in the protest, follow this link.

There was a counter protest led by Victoria Jackson, former Saturday Night Live cast member, who held a sign saying, "Ban Sharia."  It is unfortunate that the face of the opposition to the Vanderbilt anti-free speech rally was that of Victoria Jackson with a sign that implies their is a need to "ban Sharia."  Students at the rally showed their contempt for views contrary to their own by turning their back on Jackson and cutting off her microphone. You can read Jackson's account of the protest and see pictures at this link. Carol Swain was not present for the protest.

Swain has agreed to debate those who took issue with her editorial. The Vanderbilt Hustler quotes her as saying, "Although I am on sabbatical this semester, I would be interested in facilitating a balanced debate on the topic, if the students can adhere to ground rules about civility and open dialogue."

Labeling speech with which they disagree as "hate speech" and banning it, shouting down opposing views, and forcing universities to disinvited those with a view counter to the politically correct liberal view of the day is a common tactic of the left.  While teacher tenure at Universities often protects bad teachers, without teacher tenure, Dr. Swain and others like her could not risk standing up to liberal orthodoxy.

Vanderbilt has a poor record in supporting free speech. A couple years ago, Vanderbilt kicked off campus those Christian organization that were the wrong kind of Christians. Any organization allowed to function on campus could not discriminate on the basis of religion.  So, a Christian organization could not even have a requirement that their members have certain believes. In the name of tolerance and acceptance, Vanderbilt has show intolerance and contempt for freedom of conscience, freedom of association, and free speech.

Writing on her Facebook page today, Carol Swain said, "I have been teaching and writing for 26 years, but yesterday was the first time a group of students and colleagues found me intolerable." She also wrote, "Why are today's university students so fragile they need counseling and affirmation whenever they hear something that makes them uncomfortable? Learning how to deal with your emotions is part of growing up."

Tennessee citizens are taking an active roll in the selection of textbooks.

The process of approving text books for use in Tennessee's public schools has in the past been a pretty lame and superficial process. For one thing, the number of people appointed to the commission could not possibly read all of the text books they are charged with approving in the allotted time and there has not been a citizen watchdog group that exerted influence on the commission. Usually no one showed up at the public hearings on textbooks.

Since most textbooks in use are the same book from one state to another, we can be thankful for the activism of Texas parents who have kept the worst of text books from being approved. For about 50 years or more, Texas has been the filter that kept the worst in liberal indoctrination from making it into the text books of the nation. Since Texas has such a huge share of the market, if Texas rejected a textbook the publisher would go back and revise it in order to get it approved. Texas however could not keep all bad textbooks off the market. Some books are not even considered for use in Texas, so those were never reviewed by the Texas textbook commission. And, Texas could not catch everything.

For the first time that I know of, Tennessee is taking seriously the process of reviewing text books. This year dozens of parents across the state devoted their summer to actually reading the Social Studies textbooks that were up for adoption and they expressed their concern to the text book commission.

Below is a report from Thomas Bunetta posted on the Tennessee Eagle Forum Facebook page:

The Tennessee Department of Education’s Textbook Commission is meeting to consider approval of recommended social studies textbooks for the state’s public schools. Normally, nobody from the public shows up at these meetings. But this time, ACT! for America chapter leaders and members are out in force. They’ve done their homework, using our “Education or Indoctrination: The Treatment of Islam in 6th through 12th grade American Textbooks” report. They’ve done the legwork, educating public officials and the members of this textbook commission, showing them the many flawed and biased ways Islam is presented in the textbooks they are considering.

And then the time comes for the commissioners to vote on whether or not to approve the textbooks. And not one of them makes a motion to do so. So a second call was made for a motion. And not one of them offers the motion. The state’s Director of Curriculum stands up and sternly warns the commissioners there’s a deadline looming and they need to approve these books. And the commissioners hold fast and refuse to approve the textbooks.

    Wow.

To our knowledge this is the first time a state textbook selection committee has refused to approve textbooks due to concerns about how Islam is presented! Yes, folks, you can fight city hall. It’s not easy, but it can be done. You have to be informed, organized and strategic. Which is what we do at ACT! for America and what our Tennessee chapter leaders and members did. They did it smart. They did it right. And they’re just the latest example of what ACT! for America is accomplishing and how our strategic and grassroots approach WORKS!

The final chapter still has to be written. There’s another commission meeting on October 23rd. We need the commissioners to stand their ground and refuse to approve these social studies textbooks. If you live in Tennessee, you can help push this across the finish line by contacting the Rutherford County chapter of ACT! for America at rutherfordcountyact@gmail.com.

Thank you, ACT! for America chapter leaders and members in Tennessee for your awesome work on our behalf. Keep fighting the good fight!
This fight over text books used in public schools started in Williamson County over a textbook that activist claimed was biased against Israel and equated Israeli self defense with Palestinian terrorism. The textbook in question was A Cultural Landscape: An Introduction to Human Geography, used in a human geography class, an elective in an Advanced Placement course. The specific complaint was a passage that asked students this question: “If a Palestinian suicide bomber kills several dozen Israeli teenagers in a Jerusalem restaurant, is that an act of terrorism or wartime retaliation against Israeli government policies and army actions?”

My feeling at the time was that smart high school seniors who next year will be in college did not need to be protected from that kind of thought-provoking question. Also, the protest opposing this textbook was led by Laurie Cardoza-Moore, who heads a Christian Zionist group called Proclaiming Justice to the Nations. She is best know for leading the opposition to the building of a Mosque in Murfreesboro. I certainly would not have joined her in that fight. I believe the First Amendment also applies to Muslim and that they have as much right to build a mosque as do Mormons or Jews to build a temple, or as do Hindus or Buddhist or any Christian sect to build a house of worship.
Because of her anti First Amendment position on that issue, I was not likely to support her fight over textbook selection. Also, I am leery of  ACT! I have attended some of their meetings and saw a film they produced, but have  tended to think they painted all Muslims with the same brush and their position was on occasion more based on bigotry than logic.

Not being a fan of ACT or Laurie Cardoza-Moore I am, nevertheless, pleased with the developments taking place in the Tennessee Textbook Commission. I am glad that citizens are taking an active roll in the selection of textbooks. In countering the bias in textbooks as it relates to the presentation of Islam and history concerning Muslims, ACT has done their homework. They have meticulously examined numerous textbooks and countered claims that white washed or distorted Islam history or doctrine or contemporary Islamic culture. They have footnoted and documented with other superior sources those claims and generalizations that presented Islam is a favorable light or misrepresented historical fact. To view their report go to this link: Education or Indoctrination, The treatment of Islam in 6th thought 12th grade American textbooks.

While ACT is concerned with the presentation of Islam, I am much more concerned with a liberal bias presented in books on American and World history and economic matters. I wish someone was taking the same meticulous approach to how history books portray the cold war, Communism, the arms race, the settlement of America and the conflict between Europeans and Native Americans, the sixties, environmentalism, social movements, and government economic intervention and the roll of free markets.

What is taught is our schools is too important to be left to academics who have a liberal bias. It is an undeniable fact that liberalism is the dominant point of view in academia. While academics may claim they adhere to the highest academic standards of objectivity, it is unavoidable that their own prejudice finds its way into the textbooks they write. All textbooks should be examined carefully and we should have confidence that controversial topics are presented with balance, that sensitive matters are age-appropriate, and that text books are accurate and that they educate rather than indoctrinate.

Is Governor Haslam turning Tennessee into Saudi Arabia?

You better get fitted for your burqa, because Governor Bill Haslam is rapidly imposing Sharia Law in Tennessee. That is, if you believe the wacko-nut-jobs. The piece I am posting below came from a small blog called Bradley County News. It would be little noticed except it is being reposted on sites like the Tennessee Eagle Forum Facebook page and Tennessee Federation of Republican Women Facebook page. National sites such as Creeping Sharia, post equally bizarre stuff. I am not sure how many people believe this stuff, but there are some.

One of the lead posters of right wing fringe paranoia conspiracy theory stuff in Tennessee is Rosine Ghawji, co-chair of the Memphis Tea Party but there are several others. Other fringe stuff concerns Agenda 21, Common Core, and FEMA concentration camps. I don't know how many Republicans buy into the nutty stuff; I hope not many. Certainly some of the issues the nut fringe promotes can be legitimately criticized. One may have legitimate concerns with Common Core or Agenda 21, but to see them as all part of a diabolical plot all interconnected is the thinking of a nut-job.

I don't want to attack other Republicans. I would rather focus on defeating Democrats but Republicans must call out the nut jobs and marginalize them from time to time. We can not let the loudest voices dominate the conversation. We should not let the fringe represent the movement or the party.

I am not sure I should repost this because by calling attention to it is to promote it. On the other hand, I want those who may not know how the nut-jobs are attacking our governor and how they are spreading irrational fear to see an example of what is being spread.

Governor Bill Haslams deliberate attempt to make Tennessee Sharia compliant- The Timeline

Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam has made it clear by his repeated actions that he will pursue a policy that promotes the interest of Islamist and their radical ideology as long as he is governor.

The attempted takeover of our great state by the left, the progressive or the communist was expected. What was not expected was the underhanded approach by Governor Bill Haslam to dismantle our sovereignty one step at a time, methodically, making our state Sharia compliant with his policies.

Republican In Name Only Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam has done all within his power to provide the venue for our demise.

Schermerhorn Concert Hall not to become Music Clity Mosque

Maybe you never heard the rumor, but it you did, rest easy. The Nashville Symphony's beautiful Schermerhorn Concert Hall, which was rescued from a bankruptcy sale at the last minute will not become a mosque. Before being rescued from bankruptcy, it was not going to become a mosque. The symphony has not subleased the hall or part of the hall to a group to use as a mosque. Or, at least some of the people who were saying this are now saying it was all a hoax.

In emails and Facebook postings an alarm was being sounded that people needed to organize to stop The Schermerhorn from becomng a mosque. This rumor was starting to pick up steam even beyond conservative activist in Nashville. It was reported on Michelle Backman's facebook page and the Michael Savage facebook page and other sites.

I did not report on this.  I would have been hesitant to join the cause anyway. If it went on the auction block and an Islamic group bought it, I would not be happy about that but I would not be terribly alarmed and would see no grounds for opposing that development. I might would have urged greater effort to find a solution that saved the Hall from the action block, and might would have made a modest financial contribution to efforts to save the Hall, but would have not joined law suites or street demonstrations.

If the Hall could not have been saved from the action bloc, and a Muslim groups  bid was the highest, so be it. While not joining a movement similar to the effort to stop the Murfressboro mosque, I would have reported on it. I am glad I did not. It was a hoax. Or, apparently it was all a hoax. Some of the people who were spreading the alarm now say they were the victim of a hoax, so I assume the whole thing was a hoax.

It was a pretty convincing hoax. The hoaxers created a good looking website that said, "Welcome to the Al Hussein Music City Mosque and Islamic Center, opening November 2013 at The Schermerhorn Symphony Center."  The site has a mission statement and list as their activities:

    * Five daily prayers * Friday khutba in English and Arabic And Somali * Islamic education classes in Arabic, Somali and English. * Weekned school for youth and children * Family serives (Marriage, counselling...) * Homeschool *Ramadan activities include: daily iftar, Traweeh, Tahajud, Eid prep. eid party. etc. *
I almost posted this, but something just did not smell right so I held off. I am glad I did not spread the rumor. It is reported that the hoax originated with a disgruntled Symphony employee, but that is not confirmed either. To view the website, follow the link. If there is more to this story than what I have reported, please let me know.

Glendale Babtist Ch. Muslim interfaith event to be countered by Bill Warner of Political Islam.

    From Tennessee Freedom Coalition:

    Rod -

    On Thursday evening at
Glendale Baptist Church, the Nashville-based interfaith group Family of Abraham is hosting a discussion entitled "Human Rights, Civil Liberties, and Religious Freedom." The event begins at 7pm, is located at 1202 Glendale Lane, and is free of charge.

Blanche Cook, a Federal Prosecutor with the US Attorney General's office will be speaking, followed by a panel discussion that includes local muslim activist Remziya Suleyman of the American Center for Outreach and Hedy Weinberg of the ACLU of Tennessee.

This group has held interfaith events throughout the city of Nashville, each with considerable positive coverage by the Tennessean. Bill Warner, of PoliticalIslam.com has long been speaking out about the dangers of radical Islam. He plans to attend the meeting on Thursday evening and silently hand out a flier to those in attendance.  The content of the flier is included below. First, a message from Andy Miller, Chairman of the TFC.

Recently I had the pleasure of speaking at an event in Dallas that Frank Gaffney Jr. set up with about 45-50 prominent business leaders about educating and working with State Legislators on issues regarding the Political Nature of Islam. At that event was a Pastor named Rafael Cruz... Yes, Senator Ted Cruz' Father. After the event he and I talked for close to an hour and a half and he told me that one of if not the most irresponsible and dangerous groups leading folks astray regarding Islam's Agenda were America's Clergy. He specifically brought up the "Family of Abraham" Interfaith Events and made it clear to me that when a Pastor or Preacher knows so little about another religion's tenets or its clearly stated agenda and professes that "We pray to the same God" or that "Allah and God" are one in the same that they are not only leading their flock dangerously astray but are actually delivering them into the hands of Evil.

I see Pastor Cruz as completely right and correct. I stand with him and will speak the same. Anyone that can so blindly and recklessly mislead so many is in some respects more dangerous than the Evil Ideology that they pretend to understand.

Strong Words? You bet. Read the Koran!  Understand how it Works!  But also the Sira and Hadiths... Read the "Reliance of the Traveller"!  Know how abrogation works within the Koran. Understand what it is to be a Kafir and know that you are one.

But stop pretending that a Supremacist Ideology that sees us all as dirty, filthy subhumans that they can effectively do whatever they choose, including rob, rape and murder, has any interest in "Being a part of your Family". Because he is compelled by "Allah" to either convert you or end your life. Sound like your God?  Not mine, either.

    *****
    A voice for the Voiceless

    Our Demands:
    • We demand a voice for the Kafir political class, particularly in matter of government. This includes education and law enforcement.
    • We demand a voice for the martyrs of jihad.
    • We demand a voice for those who suffer under political Sharia— apostates, women, artists, gays, free thinkers.
    • We demand that those who claim leadership and speak about Islam know the Islamic political doctrine found in the Koran and the Sunna.
    A Challenge:
We will debate any person or team
Resolved: there is good in Islam for the Kafir.
We hold that the resolution is false and will debate anyone who affirms the resolution.
    Denying Human Rights
The doctrine of political Islam and the Sharia deny basic human rights as found the UN Declaration of 1947. Under the Sharia humans are not equal.
    • There are different political/legal classes in Islam based on gender and religion.
    • There is no freedom of consciousness, since apostates from Islam may be murdered.
    • There is no freedom of religion, since the Sharia dictates all public behavior, including religious behavior.
    • There is no freedom of speech due to blasphemy laws that greatly restrict what can be said.
    • Artists, writers and intellectuals are not free to do anything that offends Islam.
    • Political speech is forbidden that offends Islam.

We have seen events like this for the last 11 years in Nashville and they all have several things in common. There is only one voice allowed, that of religious Islam and its apologists. Islam is presented in the form of the Muslim experience. Since the Muslims are good, then by implication—Islam is good.
    Voiceless:
There is never a voice from those who are persecuted under the jihad laws of the Sharia. Every year thousands of Christians, Buddhists, Jews, Hindus and others are murdered because they are non- Muslims, called Kafirs.
    Voiceless:
There is never a voice from a non- Muslim (Kafir) who has knowledge about Islam, Sharia and the history of Islam. Those who hold views of any view other than—Islam is wonderful —are condemned as immoral and bigots and, as such, are not heard.
    Voiceless:
There is no voice for the victims of Sharia laws—abused women, apostates, persecuted artists, gays and writers.
    Voiceless:
There are two manifestations of Islam—religious and political. The voice of political Islam is censored. We only hear about religious Islam.
    Voiceless:
Questions from the floor are not allowed. Real discourse is forbidden.
    Federal Government
But we do have new voice tonight— the Federal government. This is the second time in two weeks that the DOJ (Department of Justice) has appeared in a Tennessee forum about Islam that does not allow a voice of the victims, reason and knowledge to be heard.
Why is DOJ inserting itself into what it sees as a religious matter?
Will there be DOJ forums centered on Hindus, Buddhists, Christians, and Jews where Kafir voices can be heard?
    To the Christians:
Christians, Jews, Buddhists, Hindus and other religions are persecuted by jihad. But, Christians are more persecuted than anyone else. Last year over 100,000 Christians died at the hands of Muslims and there have been 60 million Christians killed by jihad in the last 1400 years.
When will these martyrs be given a voice in your church?
    Family of Abraham
The early Koran speaks well of both Jews and Christians. But those verses are abrogated by these later verses:
5:51 Oh, believers, do not take the Jews or Christians as friends. They are but one another's friends. If any one of you take them for his friends, he surely is one of them. Allah will not guide the evildoers.
This is the final and ruling verse about Christians and Jews:
9:29 Make war on those who have received the Scriptures [Jews and Christians] but do not believe in Allah or in the Last Day. They do not forbid what Allah and His Messenger have forbidden. The Christians and Jews do not follow the religion of truth until they submit and pay the poll tax [jizya], and they are humiliated.

Video of Muslim sponsored event in Manchestor with commentary

This happened in Manchester and it ain't Bonnoroo

Below is a video of the the AMAC sponsored event in Manchester Tuesday night.

This video was produced by Bill Hobbs. I appreciate him recording it and making it available on Youtube.  Not being able to attend myself, this is the next best thing to being there. To read Bill Hobbs thoughts on event, follow this link.

There are a lot of rude people in the audience, yelling out comments as the speakers speak. Bill Hobbs says maybe only 5 to 10% of the people were jerks and I will take his word for it.  It doesn't take many people to dominate a crowd and create a bad impression. Starting at about at 40 in the video when U. S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Tennessee, William C. Killian is speaking the crowd gets real rowdy and shouts him down. It is real bad at about 54 in the video.

At 20:20 - 34:35 in the video, a portion of the documentary “Welcome to
Shelbyville” is show, about the Muslim experience in Shelbyville Tn and the impact on the community and the community response.

American Thinker: The Not-So-Veiled Threat to Non-Muslims in Tennessee

    From the Blog American Thinker:

The Not-So-Veiled Threat to Non-Muslims in Tennessee

by Janet Levy, June 7, 2013 - The attempted snow job by the American Muslim Advisory Council (AMAC) of Tennessee which sponsored the joint Department of Justice/FBI event, "Public Disclosure in a Diverse Society," Tuesday night in Manchester, Tennessee, did not work with the 2,000 attendees. Claims that American Muslims are loyal citizens, partners in counterterrorism investigations, part of radicalization prevention efforts, and an integral part of American society for centuries fell flat, especially coming from the host organization that was formed only two years ago in response to anti-shariah legislation in the Volunteer State.

A well-informed crowd responded with calls of "taqiyyah"....(read more)

The Manchester Free Speach resistance to Federal intimidation rally

I was not at the rally in Manchester but support the cause of Free Speech and would have attended if I had been able. My motivation would have been to support the First Amendment. While I recognize that we are in a war with radical Islam, I do not support the bigotry that says Muslims should not have the right to build a Mosque or the bigotry that says Governor Haslam should not be permitted to hire a person who happens to be a Muslim. I would have been standing side by side with some people I have previously criticized. I believe the First Amendment applies equally to Muslims and to critics of Islam. Below are reports of the rally from other sources.

    From The Tennessean:

Diversity event draws raucous crowd in Coffee County
by Nicole Young -Hundreds of people turned out at the Manchester Convention Center Tuesday evening for an event billed as a discussion of public discourse in a diverse society, with a particular focus on the Muslim religion.
People were turned away at the door because the facility was too full. Some grew angry and started hurling  terms like “Communist,” “Socialist” and “Muslim” at law enforcement officials.
    .....
Gene Policinski, senior vice president and executive director of the First Amendment Center, a non-profit educational iniative with offices on Vanderbilt Campus and in Washington D.C., said the First Amendment does not restrict the right of a public official to express opinions.

“Are public officials held to a higher standard than you or I? I think yes, but it's not a limitation,” he said. “There's nothing in the First Amendment banning anyone to say things that people find repellant, distasteful, repugnant, or even bigoted. The antidote that our founders provided for speech is more speech, not less.(link)

    From the blob Jihad Watch:

The Tennessean defames patriots who stood for free speech
I met Nicole Young of The Tennessean last night and asked her if she was as bad as her colleague Bob Smietana, who is one of the most truth-challenged, agenda-driven, pro-Muslim Brotherhood reporters in the country. Her report is probably not as bad as Smietana's would have been, but she still places front and center the preposterous claim that someone in the crowd was "afraid" of the other audience members, as if these patriots who came out to defend the freedom of speech were some gang of thugs -- but of course, that's how the mainstream media always portrays those who oppose jihad and Islamic supremacism, and the facts be damned.(link)
Nearly 2,000 at AFDI rally for freedom of speech in Tennessee
Robert Spencer and I blew into Tennessee after numerous flight delays, draconian TSA patdowns and security checks, and crippling rush hour traffic, and imagine how thrilled we were when we rounded the corner and saw throngs of patriots and freedom lovers, all happy warriors who had converged in Manchester, Tennessee to oppose the latest Obama Administration salvo against the freedom of speech -- a seminar led by an Obama-appointed U.S. Attorney on how civil rights laws could and should be used to shut down speech deemed "inflammatory" against Muslims (a label that has been used before to shut down truthful speech about jihad and Islamic supremacism). SION Board member James Lafferty, Tennessee freedom activists Lou Ann Zelenick, Joan French, Bill Warner and Rebecca Bynum, ex-Saturday Night Live cast member Victoria Jackson, and numerous other freedom fighters made their opposition known to this outrageous anti-free speech initiative, and their determination to resist it.(link)

    From the blog Atlas Shurgs:
Free Speech Showdown In Small-Town America

All eyes are on Tennessee tonight, as the fight for the very soul of America comes to a very small town: Manchester, Tennessee, a town no bigger than 60,000 people. (Almost 2,000 people were there -- that's three percent of the local population.) This was the perhaps unlikely venue for a seminar led by a U.S. attorney and an FBI special agent on how "inflammatory" speech against Muslims violated civil rights laws. Nowhere was it ever explained how there could be honest examination of Islam's teachings of jihad that wouldn't be "inflammatory" -- and that was just the point.

There were close to 800 people filling the small room to way beyond capacity. The lines were three deep along the wall, with folks spilling out into the hallways -- plus many hundreds more outside. Those outside weren't missing much -- unless they were in the mood to be admonished and hectored as xenophobes, bigots and racists by an Islamic supremacist spokesman and two Obama officials who steadfastly refused to address the elephant in the room: the reality of jihad terror and Islamic supremacism, no matter how many times the boisterous crowd called them on their nonsense.(link)

Manchester Free Speech rally grows- National figures attending.

    - Get there early to get a seat.
