Who are the 3 Dems seeking the nomination to challenge Steve Dickerson. Can a Dem beat Dickerson?

by Rod Williams - Three candidates are seeking the Democratic nomination to challenge Republican Senator Steve Dickerson in November.  They are Heidi Campbell, Kimi Abernathy, and Zaia Thombre.  Heidi Campbell is the mayor of the satellite city of Oak Hill and is the most qualified and appears the front runner in the primary election.

Steve Dickerson may be vunerable.  Like the rest of Nashville, the 20th Senatorial district is becoming more liberal.   Hillary Clinton beat out Donald Trump in 2016 in the district and in 2018 Democrat Bob Freeman picked up the House seat in the District that had been Republican Beth Harwell's for many years.  Democrats are salivating over the prospects of picking up this seat.

In an article in Tennessee Outlook the candidates are profiled and the race analyzed. See, Closely contested Democratic primary foreshadows November showdown for Senate District 20.

GOP lawmakers Steve Dickerson and Jeremy Faison to introduce medical marijuanna bill

by Jake Lowary, The Tennessean -    Medical marijuana will again become a topic of discussion and legislation during the 2017 legislative session.

An announcement from the House Republican Caucus on Friday said an official announcement will come next week from state Rep. Jeremy Faison, R-Cosby, and Sen. Steve Dickerson, R-Nashville, who are planning to introduce legislation about medical marijuana. (keep reading)

My Comment: I fully support the effort to legalize medical marijuana and also think we should legalized or at least decriminalize recreational marijuana.  Legalizing medical marijuana is a reasonable proposal even it one opposes pot use for fun.  Marijuana has proven successful in treating nausea as a side effect of Chemo cancer treatment, in the relieve of pain, treatment of seizures, treatment of depression  and other conditions. I am proud of Jeremy Faison, and Nashville's Senator Steve Dickerson for leading this effort.

Reelect Steve Dickerson to the State Senate District 20

Steve is a 20 year resident of Nashville. Born in Newton, Iowa and raised in South Carolina, Steve first grew to love Tennessee when he attended college at the University of the South in Sewanee. Later, he received his medical degree at Wake Forest University where he met his wife, Katrina.
In 1996, Steve and Katrina moved to Nashville, returning to Tennessee to raise a family and put down roots.

Steve spends most of his time off being humbled by his sons in various video games and athletic endeavors. He has found his experience to be no match for their youthful athleticism and has found himself finishing fourth in most games.

Steve’s favorite hobby is playing guitar and one of his great joys is sharing that love of music with his three sons as they each now pursue they’re own musical interest. Though he resembles James Taylor, Steve tries to meld the musical style of Eddie Van Halen and the coolness of Keith Richards when onstage. Steve won’t be quitting his day job anytime soon.

Steve has been a practicing anesthesiologist and interventional pain management doctor for over twenty years. During that time, he has also served on the Board of Trustees of the Tennessee Medical Association, been chairman of the Board of the Middle Tennessee School of Medicine, been president of the Tennessee Society of Anesthesiologists, and been elected chief of staff of two local hospitals.
In 2010, Steve ran for state senate and was defeated by the unparalleled Douglas Henry. In 2012, Steve ran, won and has represented the 20th district in the State Senate since.

Please vote for Steve Dickerson in State Senate District 20. For more on Steve Dickerson, visit his website.

(still more) What local Republican leaders are saying about the 2005 Donald Trump lewd comment caught on hot mic.

Lamar Alexander, U.S. Senator,Tennessee
I am disgusted by Donald Trump's comments. I believe he is driving the presidential campaign to a new low and is running out of time to persuade the American people that he should lead our country and represent American values.

Congressman Marsha Blackburn
While I do not agree with everything that he says, I share the same concerns on major issues facing our nation. The issues of national security, economic security and religious liberty deserve our attention and best efforts,

Congressman Diane Black
I would've yanked my son by the ear if he had talked that way when he was a teenager much less an adult. Our country's problems are severe and I am frustrated that Donald Trump's immaturity keeps distracting us. I condemn his attitudes toward women displayed in that tape,

Governor Bill Haslam
I want to emphasize that character in our leaders does matter. None of us in elected office are perfect, but the decisions that are made in the Oval Office have too many consequences to ignore the behavior we have seen.

It is time for the good of the nation and the Republican Party for Donald Trump to step aside and let Gov. Mike Pence assume the role as the party’s nominee. If he does not step aside, I will write in a Republican for the office of President.
U.S. Sen. Bob Corker,
These comments are obviously very inappropriate and offensive and his apology was absolutely necessary.
Rep. Chuck Fleischmann, R-Tenn
Mr. Trump's comments were disgusting and I condemn them. He has apologized and I'm glad he did because his comments about women are insulting and unacceptable.
Kathleen Starnes, former Chair of the Davidson County Republican Party from a Facebook post.
Tim Skow, Host of First Tuesday from a Facebook post.
Beth Harwell, Speaker of the House, Tennessee
The comments were offensive and demeaning to women. No woman should ever be the object of such remarks.
Brent Leatherwood, executive director of the Tennessee Republican Party
Party chairman Ryan Haynes finds these comments to be absolutely repulsive. There is no excusing them.

Below is Trump's statement in response to the publication of the story.

I’ve never said I’m a perfect person, nor pretended to be someone that I’m not. I’ve said and done things I regret, and the words released today on this more than a decade-old video are one of them. Anyone who knows me, know these words don’t reflect who I am.
I said it, it was wrong, and I apologize.
I’ve travelled the country talking about change for America. But my travels have also changed me. I’ve spent time with grieving mothers who’ve lost their children, laid off workers whose jobs have gone to other countries, and people from all walks of life who just want a better future. I have gotten to know the great people of our country, and I’ve been humbled by the faith they’ve placed in me. I pledge to be a better man tomorrow, and will never, ever let you down.

Displaying their double standard and selective outrage, Democrats who have consistently ignored Hillary Clinton's enabling and covering up of her husbands numerous incidents of infidelity, sexual harassment and alleged rape have been very vocal in condemning Trump's inappropriate remarks.

If by chance you have not  seen the video in question, here it is.

More remarks will be added as I come across them.

TNGOP: ‘Embarrassed Erin’ Coleman Isn’t Ready to Lead in Tennessee

TNGOP Press release, NASHVILLE, Tenn.- October 6, 2016 — Democrat Erin Coleman was interviewed by the editorial board of the Nashville Tennessean newspaper this morning and the thirty minute discussion provided a window into the thinking of one of the Tennessee Democratic Party’s top recruits.
Asked right out of the gate why she’s running in Senate District 20 against State Senator Steve Dickerson, Coleman states (1:01) how “embarrassed (she was) to be living in Tennessee.”
From that ignominious beginning, Coleman launched into a haphazard list of policy prescriptions that veered from big government spending proposals to positions that sounded as if Coleman was reading off the Smart Solutions agenda that Sen. Dickerson is advancing (which is a remarkable turnaround from 24 hours ago when the TNGOP criticized Coleman for standing for “pretty much the opposite” of everything Dickerson stands for).
Among the liberal and sclerotic positions Coleman staked out:
  • Advocated for deficit spending (8:45) for Tennessee’s roadways (currently, Tennessee has zero road debt thanks to the fiscally responsible leadership of Lamar Alexander when he was Governor);
  • Lamented that potholes (9:30) are ubiquitous on Tennessee’s highways (our state’s infrastructure system was recently ranked among the best in the nation);
  • Talked about an alleged funding shortfall (13:54) in education (Tennessee’s teachers just received a $100 million increase for salaries—with no tax increase);
  • Was critical of multiple pieces of legislation (3:21 and 4:13)—but failed to disclose that Dickerson was against them;
  • Bizarrely tried to claim she has been both very active and knowledgeable about her district yet, at the same time, was so unfamiliar with the local representation she tried to vote for a State Senator whose district she didn’t even live in (24:29).
Tennessee Republican Party Chairman Ryan Haynes reacted to the video of the interview by remarking, “Erin Coleman stands for the exact opposite of what mainstream Tennesseans believe in. You can’t be a public servant of a state you’re embarrassed to live in. You can’t advocate for deficit spending in a state known for fiscal responsibility. You can’t be a leader when you’re taking your cues from a liberal agenda that’s been rejected multiple times by our voters. This interview not only makes it clear ‘Embarrassed Erin’ isn’t ready to lead in our state, she’s not even aware of the values of our state.”

License to Rock and Roll?

Steve Dickerson: Did you know that thousands of Tennesseans have to get government permission just to work? That's why I co-sponsored the Right to Earn a Living Act, to make sure we are removing government barriers to employment here in Tennessee. ‪#‎nolicensetorockandroll‬

Sen. Steve Dickerson moves to stop the rock quarry near Old Hickory Dam.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - A State Senator has been among those who want to try and stop a rock quarry from blasting near the Old Hickory Dam.

Senator Steven Dickerson has planned to present the Dam Safety Act to the Senate Energy, Agriculture and Natural Resource Committee on Monday.

The act would stop rock quarries from blasting within a mile of any government-operated dam in Tennessee.

The bill has aimed to protect dams in Tennessee. Most of them are over half a century old. (link)

My comment: I support this effort of Senator Dickerson. I believe in private property rights and I support small government.  However, I am not purist and a fanatic.  Between the extreme of a purely libertarian anarcho-capitalist concept of the stateless society and a Dictatorship of the Proletariat Marxist Leviathan concept of the state, there are hundreds of shades of gray.  I am normally hesitant to embrace taking of ones property without a public purpose and stopping someone from doing with their property what they could previously do is a "taking," however, in this case it is justified. Those who think government should never expand and think the market can deal with all issues would say that insurance and the courts can dispense justice should blasting from a rock quarry cause a dam to fail. I am not buying that argument.

The problem with that is that by the time the damage is done, resulting in loss of life and millions in damage, it may be difficult to prove in a court of law that the blasting caused the dam to fail and the dead people will be dead and the damage will be done. Also, if a multi million dollar damage is awarded then the rock quarry company simply goes bankrupt. If there were no limits on damages, then the bond would be so huge that no company could purchase the insurance to proceed with development of rock quarry near a dam. Theoretically, if the law was amended to remove the cap on damages and to require a certain level of insurance, this issue could be resolved without a law specifically prohibiting building a quarry near a dam. That may be one way to address this problem, but I support the more direct and more certain approach of Senator Dickerson.

Common sense says that it is not wise to blast near an old dam.  Governance is often about making common sense tough decision and making exception from theoretical preferred principals. It is often about where to land on those shades of gray. I support this common sense proposal to stop rock quarries from locating near dams.

Sen. Dickerson appointed Chairman of the Senate Finance Investigations and Oversight Subcommittee

Steve Dickerson
Press release, (NASHVILLE, TN), December 7, 2015 — State Senator Steven Dickerson (R-Nashville) has been appointed Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee’s Investigations and Oversight Subcommittee. The appointment of the powerful subcommittee was made by Senate Finance, Ways and Means Committee Chairman Randy McNally (R-Oak Ridge) as the General Assembly prepares to convene the 2016 legislative session on January 12.

“This subcommittee was created to ensure that agencies of state government are accountable in reporting the appropriate financial information to our Senate Finance, Ways and Means Committee,” said Chairman McNally. “This oversight is of tremendous importance in ensuring that we have all the information that we need in order to make the most effective budget decisions with the hard-earned dollars provided by taxpayers.”

The Senate Finance, Ways and Means Committee has the responsibility of considering all measures dealing with the appropriation of state funds and has oversight regarding legislation pertaining to bonds, pensions, investments or indebtedness. Other members of the committee’s Investigations and Oversight Subcommittee include Senator John Stevens (R-Huntingdon), Senator Ferrell Haile (R-Gallatin), Senator Thelma Harper (D-Nashville) and Senate Speaker Pro Tempore Bo Watson (R-Hixson).

“Senator Dickerson has a tremendous financial acumen that will help this subcommittee weed through the large amount of reports that we receive each year,” added Speaker Watson. “This will help ensure that state spending is both transparent and done in the most resourceful and highly effective manner.”

“All of the members of this committee bring much experience to the table,” added McNally. “We are looking forward to receiving the information they will provide to help us do the most critically important job that our Legislature is charged with – construction of a state budget that best serves the people of Tennessee.”

Medical marijuana fails but Steve Dickerson fought the good fight. Maybe next session.

In case you missed it

GOP medical marijuana bill delayed until next year

The move to delay action until next year is not a surprise: House Speaker Beth Harwell, R-Nashville, recently touted aspects of the bill but said it ..

Medical marijuana would help neediest Tennesseans

Steve Dickerson
by Senator Steve Dickerson, The Tennessean, April 6, 2015- Tennesseans are in need.

About one in three Tennesseans will suffer from cancer at some point in their lives and over 30,000 Tennesseans depend on end-of-life palliative care. While medical science is rapidly advancing in both areas, we have a medicine now that could be of great benefit but we are unable to use it.

In numerous studies, extracts derived from cannabis have been shown to have widespread, beneficial impact on these illnesses and a host of others. Among the benefits, these extracts have been shown to decrease nausea, reduce pain and even impair tumor growth. Due to the federal and state laws, however, medications derived from cannabis are in legal limbo.

For several reasons, I am convinced now is the time to give these medications due consideration.

My Comment: I am proud of Steve Dickerson for sponsoring this bill and the support it gained among Republicans. I am disappointing it failed. While it failed, it advanced and will most likely pass next session . Frankly, I think recreational use of marijuana should be decriminalized. It is a relatively harmless drug, much less harmful than alcohol. People on pot do not tend to drive recklessly, commit domestic violence or engage in aggressive behavior. Any substance can be abused but no one overdoses on marijuana. I thing it is criminal that we still send people to prison for possession of small amounts of a relatively harmless substance.

If Tennessee is not ready to decriminalize recreational use of marijuana however, the prejudice against this drug should not blind us to the medicinal properties. The bills sponsored by Steve Dickerson would have allowed medical marijuana for various ailments.  There is still pending a separate bill that would legalized cannabis oil which has proven successful in preventing seizures in people with  epilepsy. That bill deserves to pass and next session the medical marijuana bill should be passed.

Ramsey: Dickerson Could Be Convincing on Taking Next Step on Medical Marijuana

Discussing a couple of medical cannabis proposals with reporters in his office, Lt Gov. Ron Ramsey says he's in favor of the bill to legalize low-THC cannabis oil for use in treating intractable seizures in Tennesseans.

Below is a an excerpt from Nashville Post on the medical Marijuana bill being co-sponsored by Senator Steve Dickerson:

Dickerson, an anesthesiologist, is the only Republican of three senators representing Davidson County.
“There are a number of illnesses which medical science has not gotten enough answers for yet, so as a physician, I’m always interested in exploring new options for my patients,” said Dickerson. “One might think if it was a life-threatening illness you might be a little bit more willing to be experimental. If it’s something that’s less of, then you’ll probably be a little bit more mundane in your treatment.” (link)
I am pleased to see this proposal advance and pleased to see Senator Dickson sponsoring it. Apparently, cannabis oil has proven effective treating seizures and its use for that purpose has been endorsed by the Epilepsy foundation.

Actually, I think marijuana is relatively harmless and we should legalize recreational use of marijuana but we should certainly allow the medical use of marijuana.  Legalizing cannabis oil is a very small step and is a much more modest step than allowing general medical marijuana for treatment of an array of  medical reasons, such as combating nausea in cancer patients, but it is a start.  I commend Senator Dickson for taking the lead on this issue.

The Davidson County Republican Picnic with video and report

Wine in grocery stores won big with 71 percent of the vote in the Davidson County Republicans' straw poll. The annual picnic with the early polling marks summer politics for the party. Attendance was down with no major elections until 2014..

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz was voted both first and second choice to win the Presidential Primary. Close behind Cruz was Sen. Rand Paul.

Charlie Tygard and Kenneth Eaton were neck and neck to become Nashville's next mayor as either voters first or second choice. Republican political consultant Mark Rogers announced straw poll results from the podium.

Mayoral hopeful Bill Freeman's 11 percent vote as first choice and 15 percent vote as second choice prompted Rogers to exclaim, "Bill Freeman's a major Al Gore donor!"

Sen. Steve Dickerson brought his rock band "No Good Deed" to entertain. Stacy Reis-Snyder spelled him with a country sound during lunch. Adam Nickas from the state party and Davidson Chairman Robert Duvall emceed the event. Recognition went to past President Kathleen Starnes, County Convention Chairman Jim Gotto and Barbara Outhier, The Winfield Dunn award went to Outhier for her work for the party.

A path to citizenship within immigration reorganization was voted down 60-40 percent. A close vote of 51 :"yes" to 49 "no" on expanding the power of the mayor and council over education

This excellent report and video is the work of Dur Fuller.  I lifted it from Youtube. You can find her blog at Dru's Blog.

GOP Summer picnic 2013

Senator Doctor Steve Dickerson rocks the house at GOP picnic
This year the Davidson County GOP picnic was held in air conditioned comfort at the Ellington Agricultural Center. We enjoyed barbecue and all the fixings.

About a dozen people had booths promoting everything from energy independence, to 2nd Amendment rights, to Stop the BRT, to Save the Fairgrounds, to education reform. The event was short on speeches and presentations, but was a great time of just socializing and visiting with old friends. There was drawings for door prices and good music performances by Steve Dickerson and Stacy Snyder.

I think about 150 to 200 people attended but I did not get a report of ticket sales, so I really don't know. There was a straw poll and I took good notes of the results and then lost the notes. I know that in the Presidential preference poll Ted Cruze and Paul Rand were the big winners. For the next Mayor people liked Kenneth Eaton and Charlie Tygard. Those who voted in the poll overwhelming favor wine sales in grocery stores and they do not support the proposed immigration reform.

Why were all Republicans replaced on the election commission

Will the city's newly appointed election commissioners do a better ...
Nashville Scene

The outgoing Republican commissioners, Dickerson says, were "all very good people, all good public servants." Asked directly why the GOP delegation decided to replace the trio, Dickerson says that as a result of a number of factors in and out of the commission's control, a "contentious situation" had developed. In light of that, he says, the delegation felt "a fresh start was the way to go." (link)

State House and State Senate now have a supermajority:

While I am disappointed at the reelection of President Obama and disappointed that our Davidson County candidates did not fair better, the one bright spot is that the State House and State Senate now have a super majorities

With a super majority, the Republicans can pass any bill they desire. Democrats cannot block any thing, nor can they keep the legislature from conducting  business by walking out.  The Republicans have quorum without the Democrats.

The challenge will be to keep the Party unified.  At one time when the Democrats were in the majority, the real division in the state legislature was an urban-rural split rather than a Democrat-Republican split. With leaders like Lt. Governor Ron Ramsey and House Speaker Beth Harwell, I think Party unity can be maintained but it may prove difficult.

The best news of the night last night was the election of Dr. Steve Dickerson in Senate district 20.

I was real disappointed that Representative Jim Gotto was not reelected and that candidates for house seats, Charles Williamson, Robert Duvall and Ben Claybaker were unsuccessful.  I was really expecting Duvall. to win.  His State House district included the area that is his Council District and I felt real good about his campaign. I was less sure of Williamson ,but thought he would win and while I was even less sure of Claybaker, I thought he had a good shot.

The fact is, Davidson County is still a Democratic island in a Republican sea.  We are making inroads and things are changing but it is slow going. Our candidates worked hard and the Party and volunteers worked hard. I don't think anyone can be faulted for not tying hard enough. In Davidson County the President had long coat tails. Unfortunately there are still a lot of yellow dog Democrats in this County and they vote the top of the ticket down for the Party.

In addition to Steve Dickerson, newly elected State Senators include Frank  Niceley, District 8; Todd Gardehnire, District 10; Janice Bowling, District 16; Ferrell Haile, District 18; Dr. Mark Green, District 22; John Stevens, District 24; and, Dr. Joey Hensley, District 28. The Senate will be 26-7 Republican majority.  For the State Senate vote results, follow this link.

It looks like the State House will be 70-29 Republican-Democrat.  For State House Vote results, follow this  link.

State Senate Candidate Steve Dickerson’s Campaign hits 60,000th Door

An Unstoppable Ground Game- Coming to a Neighborhood near You

Steve Dickerson
NASHVILLE, TN. - Dr. Steve Dickerson, candidate for the State Senate in District 20, today announced that his campaign has knocked on over 60,000 doors in Davidson County.

“From the start of this campaign my goal was to go directly to voters with a message of job creation, lower taxes and smaller government,” said Dickerson. “Talking one on one with voters in every neighborhood in this district is the key to victory and I’m proud to announce that we have knocked on over 60,000 doors across Senate District 20.”

Dr. Dickerson’s campaign has been actively door knocking since March with the help of countless volunteers and supporters. The campaign knocked a total of 30,857 doors during the Primary, a three way race Dr. Dickerson won with almost 50% of the total vote. In the General Election, the Dickerson campaign has knocked on 31,585 doors since August alone. Including the Primary and General the total number of doors knocked by the Dickerson Campaign is 62,442.

“I am humbled by the outpouring of support from volunteers all over the district,” said Dickerson. “This has been a team effort and we have run a grassroots-oriented campaign to hear from voters across the political spectrum. While we have seen tremendous financial support, it is even more humbling to see everyone that has invested their time. The encouragement that we see at each door is what gives us the drive to work hard so that District 20 has a strong, sensible voice in the State Senate.”
